The 90s was a great era for music. Emerging genres, movements, new voices, etc. It will always be my favorite music period. That’s for sure.

One of my favorite underground genres was trip hop. Never heard of it? I don’t blame ya, not many people have. Think of the House theme song. Massive Attack is a major contributor to trip hop.

Throwback Jean Jacket

A few years ago, I remember attempting to submit a DIY project to this magazine. Can’t even remember which magazine it was, but it never got accepted. Along with passing due to my bad photography skills, I’m sure they also got loads of submissions. But I thought it didn’t hurt trying anyway. I try to remind myself what’s the worst that could happen? You shouldn’t hold yourself back just because you think you won’t get what you’re after. So I did what I could and submitted anyway.

Well, every so often I come across the folder on my computer with the pictures I took and I figured I’d share a throwback. Besides, it’s jean jacket weather and I’ve been wearing my jean jacket for a couple of weeks now, so this was a DIY that was worth it.

I remember buying this jacket with the intention of sewing something on the back. Just like usual, I gathered a bunch of material and winged it. I let the fabric guide me. 😜

Tarot To-Go // April 17 – April 23

Guest post written by Victoria

There’s been a lot of nutty energy the last couple of weeks — life’s been one crazy roller coaster! Emotional highs and lows coupled with some major changes in our foundations have got many of us looking at clean slates. Basically every planet but Mars and Uranus was either in retrograde, about to enter it, or going direct which really amplified the WTF vibe. But I have great news, gang — this week is going to rock!

Let’s have a peek.

In the beginning of the week LOVE BEGINS. This is a fresh week and a clean slate, too, and the changes we have been afraid of making will start to look like hidden gems. If we can learn to love that which we resist, we’ll be golden! Just remember what The Rolling Stones said; you can’t always get what you want but if you try sometimes you might find you get what you need.

This To That // Round Wallet Paint Job

I’m all about little fix ups here and there when I can find opportunities. Especially with fabric paint. I really swear by this stuff. I’ve used it on clothes, shoes, jackets, wallets, and even surfaces that aren’t fabric. The paint lasts long, and the squirt bottle is so useful if you want to use paint right out of the bottle. The only time this paint let me down was on velvet/velour fabric. It makes sense because velvet has a raised fuzzy texture that causes the paint to crack. But besides that, I’m obsessed with fabric paint.

So with that said, I bought this round wallet a few months ago. I’ve been into round bags and such lately; they’re so visually appealing. I didn’t like the decoration on this wallet though. I wanted to put a patch on it but in the end, I couldn’t commit to a patch. I thought if I painted my usual squiggles and whatever, it would still look nice.

Ladykiller Haikus

I’ve binged so much on murder podcasts this year that I needed to take a break to gather my thoughts. But that doesn’t mean my obsession of true crime is dying. It’s just on hold for now.

While I’ve been gathering my thoughts and checking my brain to see if I retained the stories I’ve listened to, I decided to have fun and make some haikus. Because why not. Haikus really test you to see if you can tell a story in three lines.

So I’ll give it a shot:

If you want relief
From sexual frustration,
Don’t go to Aileen.

Tarot To-Go — Full Moon in Libra

Guest post written by Victoria

This week I’m writing Tarot To-Go from my new Samsung Galaxy whilst swinging in a hammock between the branches of a fantastic tree down here in Big Pine Key, Florida. I’m also testing out the low-light camera. I’m pretty impressed!

The Nomadic Mermaid has been resting her fins at one of her most favorite campgrounds. It’s at mile marker thirty-three — that’s how all the locals here give directions at least. The Keys are quirky and frequent readers will find I wind up down here a lot. This string of islands is my favorite home-off-the-road because it’s an entire community that comes together and lives in harmony around nature with the common goal of preservation as climate change threatens to turn them into the next Atlantis. But also? It could be mostly because of these incredible little deer that roam the mangrove forests and rocky shorelines.

Let Me See Ya Grill

So my birthday was last week. The big 2-7. I kept it low key not really doing much, just the way I like it. That’s just in terms of celebrating. I wanted to treat myself to a present that was a little off beat. For years I wanted a gold cap tooth, and that’s exactly what I bought myself. I researched how-to’s and where-to’s and found a local place not too far from work. It felt strange walking over to take a mold of my teeth during my lunch break.

But before I jumped into it, I wanted to make sure I wasn’t being another ignorant white girl. The last thing I want to do is to offend people with my choice in fashion/jewelry. Turns out, the history of gold teeth is just as you’d expect. Or maybe not. I don’t know what you’re expecting.

Gold was first used in dentistry, and was used as dental castings. Pretty basic and makes sense. They’re sturdy. In other cultures, grills were worn as a status symbol. Gold teeth and gold caps were a sign of wealth. Not only gold, but diamonds and jade as well. Jade stones were directly inserted into their teeth. So teeth jewelry was a thing in AD times.

Rain Gear Set

I’ve been quite a busy bee and I’m happy I finally get to share projects I’ve been working on. I don’t talk about my 9-5 life too much. I like to keep work thoughts at work and I stop thinking about work as soon as I leave the building.

But, when exciting things happen then I’m cool to talk about it. I work for a small shoe company. We make affordable footwear, mostly in kid sizes appealing to lower income families and parents who need something cheap since they watch their children grow out of their shoes in the blink of an eye. For now, I’m the only designer which has plenty of tough and busy moments, but is also rewarding when I see some of our products in stores.

Illustrated Women In History

I’ve been busy the past few months working on a bunch of stuff on the ~dl~. At the same time I’ve been getting reacquainted with drawing and illustrating. I went to school for illustration, so I feel a little shameful when I say I’m a bit rusty. I’ve been loaded with personal crafty and sewing projects that it felt weird focusing on drawing everyday.

Meals On Wheels // Twin Peaks Edition

Sometimes you come across a tweet that stops you in your tracks. This tweet ⤴ is one of those, especially if you’ve watched Twin Peaks and think the world is turning into a shriveled up heartless, bitter blueberry right now.

The current state of our country is (to quote the “president” as of now) – SAD! Their justifications for taking funding away from programs that we all know actually DO work just doesn’t make sense. We’re living in opposite land and these days anything seems to be possible.
