That ’70s Style // Jackie Edition

You know when you don’t have cable but you still get a few channels for free when you plug in the cable cord? Well, surprisingly, we don’t get channel 2 or any of the other basic channels. Instead, we have the LAFF channel and the Grit channel. Because we don’t have a good, wide variety of channels, we tend to only watch LAFF.

On that channel, I’ve watched a whole lot of Night Court, Roseanne, Drew Carey Show, and That ’70s Show. I’m not a big fan of That ’70s Show, but it’s growing on me. I’ve mostly been watching it for the psychedelic scene transitions, and Jackie Burkhart’s outfits.

Jelly Bracelets, Bands, & Bangles

I grew up in the 90’s with both stylish and cheesy trends. Even though some trends were fresh, a lot of them were recycled from previous decades. Some originated with back stories we didn’t even know about.

Enter jelly bracelets. In the 80’s, people such as Madonna and Cyndi Lauper made them cool. In the 90’s, Gwen was all about it, and apparently so was I. I twisted them up when I wore them just as Gwen did. It made me feel cool. Then in the 2000’s, I guess the trend came back and they were out in stores again, in which I bought a crap ton. So much color variety.

Let Me See Ya Grill

So my birthday was last week. The big 2-7. I kept it low key not really doing much, just the way I like it. That’s just in terms of celebrating. I wanted to treat myself to a present that was a little off beat. For years I wanted a gold cap tooth, and that’s exactly what I bought myself. I researched how-to’s and where-to’s and found a local place not too far from work. It felt strange walking over to take a mold of my teeth during my lunch break.

But before I jumped into it, I wanted to make sure I wasn’t being another ignorant white girl. The last thing I want to do is to offend people with my choice in fashion/jewelry. Turns out, the history of gold teeth is just as you’d expect. Or maybe not. I don’t know what you’re expecting.

Gold was first used in dentistry, and was used as dental castings. Pretty basic and makes sense. They’re sturdy. In other cultures, grills were worn as a status symbol. Gold teeth and gold caps were a sign of wealth. Not only gold, but diamonds and jade as well. Jade stones were directly inserted into their teeth. So teeth jewelry was a thing in AD times.

White Hair, No Care

I’m 26 and I would say 45% of my hair is now growing in white. How I feel about it? Undecided. For me, it’s all or nothing, so it’s just awkward.

Genes are a funny thing because my mom started going white at a pretty young age too. I’m sure dyeing my hair since age 11 hasn’t helped the situation either, but I’ve accepted the fact that my genes aren’t so great when it comes to hair.

Dyeing my hair black when all my hair wants to do is grow in white is kinda the worst thing. I feel like an old lady trapped behind a baby face, which has such a juxtaposition game happening. I imagine it throws everyone off. It still throws me off when I look in the mirror. And I especially feel odd when I use black spray to cover up my roots every morning. I feel like that’s an old lady move.

Guide To Living The Mermaid Life

Sounds kinda full of myself to assume that I know what it’s like to be a mermaid. BUT if I wanted to live the mermaid life, I would be all about things that revolve around scales, glitter, gold, pastel, and elegance. Keeping that in mind, I compiled a list of things that I felt represent mermaids and captures the elegant feeling we all think of when we think of these classy sea gals.

So if you want to live the modern mermaid life, here are materialistic things for you to consider having!

01. Mermaid Shampoo & Conditioner – From reviews I’ve read all over the ‘net, this company has managed to capture exactly what mermaid hair smell like. I have the Shine Spray and it’s the best thing I could have purchased for my hair to shine while smelling uh-mazing.

The Fanny Pack Debate

01 | 02 | 03 | 04 | 05 | 06 | 07 | 08

Fanny packs get such a bad rep. Don’t you think?

Here’s the thing, they’re just the most perfect concept! You have a bag around your waist – not on your back giving you back pains, not hanging off your shoulder where you worry about it sliding off, and not in your hands where you get tired of holding it. Fanny packs keep your hands free, and there’s enough space for you to actually store things as opposed to a small clutch or just your pockets. I just don’t understand where we went wrong with this concept.

Style Transformation

So as a “Flashback Friday”, here’s a post I’ve been compiling pictures for…for at least a few months now. This is the most you’ll ever see my face in a post, that’s for sure.

I’ve been thinking lately as to how much my style has changed and how it matched my personality and the feelings I felt at the time. To me, I can see the change over the years but I also feel as if I’ve been pretty consistent. I’ve been wearing the same clothes for a long time since I’ve managed to fit into everything as I basically stopped growing at age 12, aaaand I’m also a hoarder. I never really followed trends, but I was inspired by them over the years encouraging me to make it my own, as I live the DIY lifestyle.

The one thing that changed dramatically was my hair. I can look at pictures and know what year it was. Is that excessive?
Can I show you?

80’s Fashion In Films

Over a year ago, I wrote up a post about my top three favorites featuring 90’s fashion in movies. Can’t believe it’s taken me over a year to write a follow up, but I did it.

If you asked me what my favorite era is for fashion and style, hands down, 90’s is number one. If you asked my second, hands down, 80’s for sure. I love the bright colors, tacky nature, and Memphis design. The music is memorable, the movies are classics, and it’s an era that we keep revisiting to gather inspiration. It was such a ‘one of a kind’ period and it’s full of a plethora of amazing things.
I put together a list of my top favorite 80’s stylings in movies that I appreciate a ton.

Cyndi Lauper in Vibes [1988]

Cyndi Lauper Vibes
Yes, a movies featuring both Cyndi and Jeff Goldblum exists, and it’s not exactly a very well known movie. As you probably expect, yes it’s a cheesy flick, but it’s fun. It involves psychics and lost temples. As you’d expect, Cyndi’s style also makes its way into the movie. It’s a little toned town compared to her known eccentric look, but her outfits are still super fun and very Cyndi.
The film itself didn’t get very high reviews, and while watching, you can probably see why. But Vibes is an entertaining watch and Cyndi is just precious. Her quirky personality stands out just as much as her wardrobe, and it’s hard to take your eyes off her. It’s honestly a real pleasant watch, especially when Cyndi is on the screen.

90’s Fashion In Films

I had just arrived home on Saturday from my three month long trip and am real excited to be back. While I prepare my photos for the upcoming posts that will be more in depth about my trip than what I was able to post while in Greece, I’ll post my weekly entertaining post today that I accidentally neglected the past couple of weeks.
So here we go.

The visual aspects of movies are something that is hard to ignore. I wouldn’t call myself fashion obsessive, but I appreciate fashion that is featured in films. Obviously eccentric styles are my favorites as I have shown here.

Current Style Inspirations

I’m not fashion obsessive, and I never know what’s trending. I’m pretty oblivious to what’s going on in the fashion world. I honestly still wear clothes that I bought ten+ years ago. With that said, I do check out some fashion blogs time to time.

Maybe talking about style as opposed to fashion is the better term to use. I don’t think I have a specific style, and I don’t think a specific style attracts me. I pick and choose what I like which inspires me to make and customize everything I own or want to own. As long as it’s fun and comfortable, I’m happy.
