Rainbow Faces

Portrait

First off, happy August! Can’t believe how far into the year we are already. This also means that I will be in Greece for three more weeks. I can’t believe I’ve been here two months already. Boy does time REALLY fly.

Onto the topic of the post…so, my aunt owns a textile shop here in Athens, but is not only limited to working with textiles. She does murals, displays, portraits, etc. I may or may not have gotten my artistic genes from her. Anyway, my aunt recently took a job with a client to make her curtains and pillows but along the way, the conversation became about art and all of a sudden I was assigned a job to do portraits by the client’s brother. He wanted a portrait of his daughters. This discussion was weeks ago, but because of the economic crisis here, the project was delayed.

Psycho Killin’ Type

Talking Heads Quote

I’ve been wanting to step up my typography game. I went to college for illustration, and 95% of my professors taught us to stay away from typography in our art. We were free to experiment with type if we wanted, but it wasn’t recommended. So most of us never did.

I love graphic design and typography and have always had a huge interest in fonts, but I also enjoyed learning about illustration and how to further enhance my skills so I went to school for that. There was a weird superiority competitive aura between the fine art students, illustration students, and graphic design students, and for whatever reason the school found it wasn’t necessary for any of those three majors to interweave, we unfortunately weren’t given the option to learn more and experiment with fine arts or graphic design. I really wanted to learn more about type, and the one class we were required to take that “taught” typography was just crap, if I could be honest.

Paper Cutouts

I think I’ve mentioned before that I’ve getting into paper crafts more because of the limited crafty supplies and projects I have here.

We’ve come across rolls and rolls of tracing paper. So I thought to draw figures/people and create shapes on the people to create color blocks on said tracing paper.

This To That // Patchwork Chair

Patchwork Chair

(Image taken from Design-Fair.)

One style that I’ve come across in Greece that everyone loves is patch work. Bags, clothing, couches – you name it, they love it.
My aunt owns a textile shop and she has tons of binders with sample fabrics that have no use. She gave me some binders and her permission to do anything I wanted with them.

My Kind Of Type

(Quote was taken from Grimes, whom I can’t ever stop listening to.)

This is what the ultimate me type looks like. When I doodle the alphabet in sketchbooks, it always looks somewhat like this. So I decided to officially draw out the alphabet in Illustrator, and so therefore it’s official. This is Maria’s Funky Monkey Type.

This To That // Decoupage Table

Decoupage Table

(Look at dat Athens sunlight, yo. It’s blinding.)

I’m not very good at vacationing. I need to constantly be doing something or else I get restless. Since this is an intended extended vacation, I came prepared with a sketchbook and colored pencils, but I miss jumping between projects. You may ask how do I finish projects if I jump around so much? Well, I don’t; I have a slight case of crafty ADD, and a huge chunk of unfinished projects.

My Guide To Resizing Shirts

Learning to sew really made life easier when it came to shopping. I love thrift shopping, and coming across a shirt that didn’t fit me right was always disappointing. Years of practicing and experimenting eventually helped me look past sizes and buy whatever I liked if I was down to put in the work to fix ’em up.

I thought I’d write up a post sharing my method of resizing shirts. This post was written to downsize, so if you came across a shirt you want to make smaller, carry on!

Veruca Salt Bottle Top Magnets

Reusing, upcycling, diy-ing – all things I like to do. Mix that with pop culture, and BAM – me.

My brother for the longest time has been saving bottle tops for reasons I don’t really know of. Kinda made me question how much beer he used to drink, but whatever, it was more surface area for me to work with. I played with bottle tops first with these Gwen Stefani magnets I made. And then I carried on and made these fun Veruca Salt magnets.

Keychains With Pizzazz

I’m going to take a tiny break from New Orleans thangs and share these fun keychains I made!

I used Sculpey oven-bake clay. I always wanted to make something fun and bake it, but I had an irrational fear of something going wrong during the baking process, resulting in the house burning down. I decided to get over that and try it out, and it turned out to be a-okay!

This To That // Little Storage Box

I started this little revamp back in December and finally got around to finishing it this week. Oops. Better late than never?

For a while, I’ve been on a roll with revamping and upcycling things I own – from little containers to my mirror to my cabinets. I’m not very good at buying new things because I tend to feel guilty. I kinda live by “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”. Why replace if they’re still usable and working? At this point, I’ve just gotten accustomed to revamping everything I own. It’s become my thing.
This little guy I decorated back in elementary school. I got it in some kind of kit with markers and stickers, and I felt a little embarrassed still using to this day when it screams “hey, I’m 11”. Doesn’t really fit my current life interests…
