Portland Through Fish Eyes

While I’ve been absent, I’ve accomplished a little goal I’ve been meaning to do for a while – getting film developed.
About two years ago during my final semester in college, a group of my classmates and I were talking about taking a trip for our last spring break ever. I had been talking about Portland so much that we all agreed to make that our destination. I brought film with me, and I bought some disposable cameras while we were there. I developed all my disposables since then, but there was still quite a bit of film I didn’t develop immediately which was some 110 film.

Graceland, Memphis

Graceland

If you’re just checking in, I just came back from a week long road trip with some friends. To recap, we were in the Outer Banks, North Carolina for the majority of the trip, made stops in Asheville, NC, Nashville + Memphis, TN.

Our original plan involved us staying in North Carolina the whole time, but because of circumstances and opportunity, we took advantage of having a rental car and decided to drive through Tennessee making Memphis our final stop. My friend expressed how visiting Graceland has been a dream of hers, and we made it happen. It was something I never planned on doing in my life, but I’m happy we did. It was a fascinating experience, and one of my favorite stops on the trip!

Nashville, TN Highlights

Day four of our trip was a big traveling day for us. We left the rental house in the morning, drove all the way to Asheville, NC for dinner, and then drove to Nashville, TN to the motel to sleep the night away. It was loads of driving, and we arrived to Nashville so so so late. And the motel experience was pretty uncomfortable, almost to the point where it felt as if we stepped into a horror movie, but I won’t get into that because it’s in the past and I’m alive. 👐

North Carolina Highlights

(A cool mural that was not too far from where we stayed.)

It’s wild to think about all the traveling we took part in within the week we had our rental car.
The four days we were in North Carolina, we stayed in the Outer Banks, and took a few trips around town to see what the Outer Banks had to offer. The majority of the time, we found ourselves chasing the sunset and looking out for awesome nature spots. It was a very picturesque area.

Down The Coast We Go

Nags Head, North Carolina

So I’ve had quite a number of family friends ask me, “didn’t you go on enough vacations this year?”. I did, but I’m trying to do this thing where I say yes more than no when good opportunities comes along.
Two weeks ago, a friend asked if I wanted to go on a road trip to North Carolina. Her aunt has a summer house that had a week free between being rented out and my friend wanted to reserve it for that week. I don’t have an excuse to really go south, so here was an excuse and opportunity. This year has been trip-tastic, so I figured why not go out with a bang and end it off with a rando road trip to the Old North State.

The Fortezza

Fortezza of Rethymno

Not too far from the city center of Rethymno in Crete is and old castle that protected the city against attacks from the water. To get to the castle was quite an uphill battle, which was the worst in the beaming sun.

It was pretty much open land with a few structures which were still mostly intact. They were probably restored as a couple of the buildings were being used as “art galleries”, or so that’s what it seemed like.
Obviously the Fortezza was right above the water. Standing at the castle, there’s a stunning view of the city underneath and a view of the water which was amazing.

More Streets Of Chania

Streets of Chania, Crete

It’s kinda strange revisiting all of these pictures now since I’ve been home for a week. I’m back in the American grind and thinking about Greece feels foreign to me again. I didn’t think I’d adjust so fast, but when you’re home, you’re home. Home becomes all you know again.

Old Town, Chania, Crete, Greece, Europe, Earth

Streets of Chania, Crete

Crete is Greece’s largest island, and is said to be a 12 hour drive from one end to the other. That’s about where I am in New York to the tip of South Carolina. Equivalent to a road trip down a good chunk of the east coast.
When I arrived by boat I just didn’t know what to expect at all. I pictured tiny villages in mountains filled with goats and donkeys. I was excited to see how wrong I was! It’s a very developed island which has areas just as hopping’ as Athens.

Vacation Unexpectations

Streets of Chania, Crete

Finally have a chance to check in. I have to admit, looking at previous posts while being in Greece, it didn’t hit me until now how much I’ve done the past nine months. I made my big move to the west coast almost a year ago, and even though I’ve moved back home since then, I really haven’t been in New York much. I began the year in Portland, with a week in Louisiana a few months later, and now two months in Greece. Even though this was definitely not how I imagined things would play out, I was lucky to get out and explore this year because if I was still in Portland, none of these trips would have happened. Life would be so different, so I’m becoming appreciative for this free time.
