Dog Portrait On Wood

This 2020 is bringing the crafty witch out in me. I was commissioned to do this pet portrait by a friend of her precious baby girl that passed away. Jessie was fierce but also a big mush. Forget those pitbull stereotypes.

Anywho, I love working on wood, and I had all intentions of painting this portrait, but I decided to take a different route after I sketched everything out.

I pulled out my good colored pencils and tested them to see what they’d look like on a wood surface. Turns out, it took really well and the colors were pretty vibrant and blended well. As usual, I used every color in the rainbow.

I kept going, and before you know it, the piece came together. I had to pause on the commission because I went away for a week, but I came back fresh and ready to finish it up.

This is a lesson to me and everyone else – don’t stop experimenting. We should never be done experimenting with art. There’s still so much to play around with and discover. For me, there’s a lot more to play with on wood. It’s truly my favorite surface.
