David Bowie Tribute

David Bowie

It’s been a week since David Bowie passed, and guess what – it won’t stop sucking. It’s unfortunate and disappointing to lose a legend like him, but the legacy he left behind is great and wonderful, and he’s touched and influenced so many people. It’s pretty amazing that one can leave behind what he left behind, and that makes for such an extraordinary life. David Bowie will forever be remembered that way.

I compiled a tiny list of pretty wonderful David Bowie cover songs. My top five. I’m sure there are so many more great ones out there, so feel free to share!

01. Warpaint – Ashes To Ashes
This is probably my number one favorite Bowie cover. It’s really not an easy task for bands to cover songs and make them wonderful. Most come out mediocre. Especially if you take on the task of covering someone as important as Bowie. You gotta do it justice. Warpaint manages to make this song sound theirs, and it’s mesmerizing.

02. Nirvana – The Man Who Sold The World
We all know this classic performance from their Unplugged session. To be honest, when I was getting into Nirvana back in middle school, I fell hard for this song but didn’t know it was a Bowie cover song till years later. I also didn’t realize how many cover songs they incorporated into their set for that performance, but I digress. Kurt really makes this song special.

03. Kittie – Space Oddity
Kittie has been known for recording few cover songs, and every song they touch has that Kittie spin – they stay true to their sound while managing to capture the aspects that made the originals gold. This is not a different case. They managed to do it again and it’s amazing.

04. Matchbox 20 – Modern Love
It’s enjoyable listening to Rob Thomas sing this with his signature vocal style. Does anyone else agree?

05. Scott Weiland – Fame
Scott made it pretty clear in multiple interviews how much David Bowie has influenced him. It’s not a stretch hearing him singing a Bowie song as his vocals sound natural singing this song. It’s unfornuate that we lost Scott late last year, so hearing Scott singing a Bowie song kinda hurts. Two legends gone.

RIP David Bowie. RIP Kurt Cobain. & RIP Scott Weiland. That’s all I can say. This is kinda a sad list.
