Artistic Aesthetic

Sign language art

So I believe everyone has a right to their own opinion on art. Duh. Everyone has a different aesthetic that attracts them. Not everyone enjoys the same art. I can say this many different ways and they will always be true obvious statements.

Concerning Duran Duran’s new album Paper Gods, there’s been a lot of talk about how “lazy” the album cover is. It’s a cut and paste job with a gradient in the background. “So what if it features images from old videos and album artwork” is what I’ve been reading in Youtube comments. People are disappointed that the artwork being released is the final artwork. It seems to be really bothering a lot of people. ↓

Duran Duran Paper Gods Art

My opinion? I love it. I’m a sucker for colors, gradients, and cut and paste. I think it’s definitely eye catching which is great if you want to draw people in and make them curious about you and your band. Really can’t be a bad thing. I don’t think it’s gaudy or lazy. Just because it could have been a fast graphic to create doesn’t make the artwork bad.

It made me wonder am I wrong for loving it/am I loving it because I freakin’ love Duran Duran and I love everything they do? Hell no. Well, yes I love Duran Duran and everything they do, but everyone in the world has different styles of art that interest them. I love a whole lot of different art. This would fall into “graphic art” that I enjoy: bold, solid, with a whole array of colors. I especially love the cut and paste feel which is not everyone’s thing. I get it, but this is what makes us all unique. We all have different tastes, which is a wonderful thing.

On the same note, one reason why I still favor physical albums is because of the artwork. I love collecting cd’s and vinyl because I love having my hands on physical art that inspires me. I loved the cut and paste feel to this album, so I was inspired to go ahead and make my own cut and paste on a gradient that you can see at the top of this post. If you’re curious, it’s sign language for Oddball Era except it literally translates to “strange time-period”. Tumayto, tuhmahto.

Anyway, aside for my love of Duran Duran’s artwork, here’s the audio video to their single off this new album. I think they still got it. What do you think?
