5 Ways To Be More Sustainable In 2020

I think it’s about time to take sustainability a little more seriously these days. New year, new goals and more action, right? I’m personally gonna try harder to not be lazy and be better about what I do and watch out for how it affects everybody and everything around me. And it could be something we can all do together.

Small steps make it easier to dip into the larger pool, so here some ideas as to where you can start to be more sustainable and environmentally friendly in 2020.

We all get hit with the urge to purge. It’s an amazing feeling to get rid of things we don’t want and/or don’t need anymore. But before you toss, first think if you know anyone that wants what your throwing out. If not, donate it to some local thrift shops or organizations that can benefit from what your throwing out. Chances are that someone out there can use what you don’t want. You know that good ol’ quote about garbage being another person’s treasure.

// Buy Used //

On the flip side, consider shopping from thrift or consignment shops. There are a lot of perks to buying second hand, especially if you’re living on a tight budget. Recently, I visited an antique shop in which I came across this set of 4 really cute soup mugs. For the whole set of four, it was being sold for $2. TWO DOLLARS FOR FOUR. You truly cannot beat second hand prices.

// Compost //

With options growing every single day to help fight against the world coming to an end, it’s become easier to look into things such as composting. I’ll be honest, I know it’s not the most easy or available task to do in a handful of places, but there are local group out there trying to give people more choices. Living in a city with not much greenery, the option we have here is to find a drop off location to bring your food scraps. I’m grateful to even have that, but it goes to show that local organizations are trying to have options like these readily available no matter where you live. Do some research for your area! I’m sure you’ll find something that works.

// Cook More & Order Take-out Less //

This suggestion is more of a challenge because cooking doesn’t come easy to many people. But it’s worth trying. There’s so many benefits to cooking at home. You know what you’re putting in your meals, you can substitute healthy options, and it gives this feeling of satisfaction to make something. Besides, who wants to continuously throw out take-out container? One of my roommates is making a 2020 goal to cook a nice meal once a month. I think coming up with small goals like this is a good place to start.

// Zero Waste Substitutes //

Just like composting, there are more products being made that are safer for our environment in terms of recycling and biodegrading. Sometimes these products may cost a little more than what we’d like to dish out of our pockets, but in the long run, you’ll see the difference in your bank accounts. And you’ll be doing something good for the environment. Sometimes it’s a challenge to figure out where to start. Lucky for you, I have a small list for you to start with.
