10 Things To Try This Year

New year, new goals, new resolutions, new fresh feeling to start doing things. Know that feeling?
I’m really convinced this is the year to be a bad ass boss bitch. 2017: year of the BABB. Here are some ways you can consider becoming a BABB. It doesn’t hurt to expand your self esteem and self worth and everything all about your self.

Learn a new language!

I feel like a lot of people say they’ll learn a new language as a resolution and with so many resources today, there is no excuse. Take local classes, as they’re offered in community colleges, local centers, or online programs such as Rosetta Stone. I recently discovered Fluent City which offers in person classes in New York, Philly, Boston, & D.C. If all else fails, apps such as Easy Ten exists.

Learn a new craft!

Be it knitting, sewing, screenprinting, learning a new craft has its benefits. I’m lucky to have so many outlets here in New York. There are endless amounts of screenprinting spaces, textile studios, sewing circles, and so much more. The cool thing is if you find a studio you like, most spaces offer memberships to use their facilities if you don’t have the space at home. I think it’s a fantastic concept to support local while doing cool things. If you need cheaper options, there are apps such as Craftsy with affordable classes you can download. Or you can even watch YouTube videos for tutorials.

Cook!

Don’t be afraid to try new recipes and ingredients. Buy some new books or follow blogs. There are a whole LOT of blogs that share recipes, especially diet friendly recipes or anything on the super healthy side. I’ve read a whole lot about the Whole30 diet which piques my interest. There are so many ways to switch it up this year from zoodles to cauliflower rice to no-bake granola balls. I’m subscribed to a bunch of websites for wellness things and almost every email includes new recpices to try that are healthy. If this sounds appealing, check out Well + Good, Self Daily, and Greatest.

Be active!

Honestly, forget the gym. It’s overkill. Take a dance or yoga class, preferably a dance class because they’re effective and more fun than the gym. I also like that it’s a bit more interactive as well. Once again New York is stuffed with classes all over the city. I plan on taking some hip hop dance classes this year which I’m super psyched about. Switching it up!

Volunteer!

Volunteer, be it for holidays or a weekly gathering at some local place to use your time to do good. There’s always people in need of help. Why not use some of your free time to help others. Don’t know where to start? Check out Volunteer Match to find a non profit that can use your time and help. If you also want to take a chance, Craigslist is worth checking out.

Subscription Boxes!

Subscription boxes are all the rage right now. There are new box themes popping up left and right. There are so many appealing subscriptions, and I want to sign up for so many! Don’t know where to start? Cratejoy has so so so many boxes and options. They definitely have something to pique your interest and it’s kinda exciting to have something to look forward to every month. I have a few boxes I’ve been eyeing.

Drink more water!

This is a year to stay hydrated. We always forget how important it is to drink more water. This doesn’t mean you don’t get to have fun with water though. I’ve been experimenting lately with lemons, rosemary, and peppermint in my water. They wake me up while I’m dozing off at work, and they have health benefits aside from the fact that it adds extra flavoring. One thing I want to try is fruit infused ice cubes, because why not. There are so many combinations of herbs, fruits, and juices to add to your drinks via ice cubes. So many ideas, and so many benefits!

Sing!

Karaoke! Why you ask? Well, singing is good for you! It relieves anxiety and stress, it exercises your lungs, it’s energizing and helps you bond with others, plus so much more. I participated in a few post-work karaoke sessions with friends and it was an instant mood booster.

Limit your social media usage!

It’s time to start living, right? It just seems that more and more technology is taking over our lives, and sometimes we need to detox from the social media. Maybe you should consider deleting accounts one by one, or at least networks you never use. It’s time to keep it basic? You’re going to feel so relieved to condense. Sometime basic is best.

Become minimal!

Try a more minimalist approach. Declutter and organize. Get rid of things and don’t be afraid to part ways with some items. You may have sentimental attachments to your things (who doesn’t) but sometimes you need to accept that you haven’t worn that sweater in five years and you probably won’t wear it for another five years. Why let it collect dust? Consider donating and/or throwing away items that are collecting said dust. Sometimes it’s time to move on, and as they say, one man’s garbage is another man’s treasure.

Hope this inspired you to switch things up this year. Like I keep saying, there are so many resources, especially online, that can make learning new things easy. If you want in person experiences, do a quick online search to find something local. There’s always something happening around town that can switch up your routine in a positive way. Just remember that learning and expanding can only do good for yourself. Step out of your comfort zone and try new things!
