Why Is Alanis Morissette So Good At Covering Songs?

Alanis Morissette Fan Art

You know, I strongly believe that Alanis Morissette does not get the credit she deserves. She’s got an identifiable killer voice and knows how to create amazing and memorable songs. And I feel people don’t appreciate her like they should. She plays an important role in music today. She also took on the role as God in the movie Dogma. So basically, Alanis is God.

Because of this whole “makeover” thing I’ve been doing this month, I’ve been listening to a lot of cover songs. I, like many people, read the comments on Youtube and have been coming across a whole lot of “Alanis does a better cover!” It’s like, hot damn, Alanis really gets around, huh. Whenever I came across a comment like that, I’d immediately search and listen, and I agree, she does them so well. She manages to make every song sound like hers while keeping familiar elements from the original songs which many bands can’t pull off. She hits all the perfect notes, and adds all the right attitude and emotion. It’s become her trademark.

So, of course I wanted to share some cover songs I came across so you can see what I’m talking about.
Enjoy.

01. Dear Prudence by The Beatles

(That bass line is everything in her rendition.)

02. King Of Pain by The Police

03. Basket Case by Green Day

Green Day was supposed to play this specific show, but with Billie Joe Armstrong entering rehab the night before, Alanis filled in. Showing how much of an amazing person she is, she dedicated Green Day’s song to Billie instead of playing a song from her newest album.

04. Crazy by Seal

05. Fake Plastic Trees by Radiohead

Alanis taught me that you can really like and appreciate cover songs. Or more specifically, her cover songs.
Anyway, she’ll forever be cool in my book.
