You know when you don’t have cable but you still get a few channels for free when you plug in the cable cord? Well, surprisingly, we don’t get channel 2 or any of the other basic channels. Instead, we have the LAFF channel and the Grit channel. Because we don’t have a good, wide variety of channels, we tend to only watch LAFF.
On that channel, I’ve watched a whole lot of Night Court, Roseanne, Drew Carey Show, and That ’70s Show. I’m not a big fan of That ’70s Show, but it’s growing on me. I’ve mostly been watching it for the psychedelic scene transitions, and Jackie Burkhart’s outfits.
Lately, tv has been consuming a lot of my time. I feel like everyone who knows me, knows that I’m cool with that. This time around for this list, I’ve got new music and tv series to add to this list. Very reflective of my life these days.
TV/MOVIES
⮑ Sweet/Vicious Being an original MTV series, I was a little skeptical that this would be a good show, but it covers the tough subject of rape on the college campus and vigilante justice – something that isn’t talked about on tv. Well, maybe the occasional Law & Order episode, but that’s pretty much it. I decided to give this show a watch and I ended up binge watching the entire series in one day. Oops! It was pretty great; I got really into the double lives the main characters were playing, but unfortunately, it didn’t make it past one season. The internet is frustrated about MTV’s decision so hopefully some other platform will give the series a chance. Anyone…? Netflix…?
⮑ Glow This recent Netflix series was way cool. I binged watched it with my roommate in one day. This series was actually based on an actual show in the 80s. It sounded too ridiculous to be a real show but now I’m curious to find it and watch it.
There’s this repetitive idea it seems that when people write scripts for film or television, they go with this office setting that has the typical characters such as the uptight boss, and the quirky secretary. At this point, it’s predictable. Not that it could be a bad thing, but it’d be nice to see quirky female boss ladies? Hmm.
But at the same time, it’s not so far away from real life because I’ve seen this a lot. The receptionist from my pediatrician from back in the day was wacky. She had frizzy red hair, bright blue eyeshadow, and red lipstick. At my current job, the secretary for the big boss has a short black bob, wears Cleopatra makeup, and all sorts of patterns that clash. I actually love this, but like I said, it’d be awesome to see a boss lady like this.
It made me think of movies and tv shows I’ve watched. The quirky secretaries: it’s a thing.
Quirks: 90’s style with large knit sweaters, large curly hair, high voice, cute but sassy attitude especially towards Deputy Andy and their precious but rocky relationship.
This year, I’ve been trying to expand outside of my 9-6 job and do some freelance work/side project fun. One thing that is a “practice what you preach” for me involves sending out emails to people and/or companies and inquire about any sort of freelance or submissions. At the end of the day, what do you have to lose? It never hurts asking even if these people and companies aren’t looking for extra or outside help.
So I came across a “help wanted” Insta post for a pin company and I thought, “hey, yolo”. After some back and forth and some test designs, it ended up being a bust which is a bummer, but these things happen. Companies knows their aesthetic and what their customer wants. I guess I was right at the border but couldn’t fully cross over the line to what they were looking for.
These days may be looking bad, especially while the protests are still alive. But sometimes we need to shut off at the end of the day and this entertainment list has been helping me shut off until the next day in which I find myself getting up and ready to fight. ✊
TV SERIES
⮑ Full Frontal With Samantha Bee The first lady late night host has been on top of everything working with her diverse group of employees bringing to light issues happening in the country today. She’s covered the election and everything in between. She’s funny, and knows what’s up. Her episodes are split up all over Youtube making it easy to keep up with her and the extra web videos she posts in between episodes.
I’ve had the word nasty on my mind a bit too much lately. Thanks, Trump!
I composed a list of things I’ve been into that could be more on the nasty side than innocent. Lots of things I’d consider goodies here!
TV SERIES
✪ Ash VS Evil Dead ↴
An awesome revival of the hit cult horror movie series Evil Dead. After tuning in last year to the series premiere on Halloween night, I was immediately hooked. The gore and dialogue has such a cheesy feel, but it’s more of a modern spoof on the old movie series. I recommend this so much if you don’t mind some gore and guts. Bruce Campbell is such a hunk 😛 The cast is great, and Lucy Lawless is my badass homegirl. I’ve become addicted to this show.
If you saw on Instagram, I attended a Powerpuff Girl pop-up shop over the weekend. It was to promote some kind of avatar app to #PowerpuffYourself. I haven’t found the details of the app, but it was a fun shop to attend.
I like making lists, I think that’s pretty apparent by now. I especially love making themed ones, and my top favorite theme is pop culture. Here is an example.
I gathered references pop culture mainstream moments of when the word banana came into play.
01. An obvious use of banana was from my all time favorite person, Gwen Stefani. She brought our attention to bananas though the drum line song we all know and can’t get enough of. But I figured it was too obvious to add this song into the list, so here’s a video where Gwen schools Stephen Colbert about bananas.
