She Wore …

Blue Velvet Art

I created a Redbubble account the other day, and I excitingly added a whole lot of work I’ve done over the years.
It’s surely making me excited to make new art. Don’t get me wrong, I love creating hands on projects for my Etsy and Storenvy shops, but there’s something about the easiness of creating artwork and leaving it up to someone else to develop the finished product, be it a t-shirt or phone case, and ship it out. It’s another way for us to kinda be lazy, but create and collaborate with others and yet make money. It’s a strange concept. Goes to show that “normal 9-5 careers” are on their way out ~~ welcome to the future.

Anyway, I digress. I was excited to dig through older and newer projects and vectorize them. I did so with this Blue Velvet piece.

I created the image on the left a while ago, with pen and ink, watercolor, and colored pencils. I had it already scanned in, so I brought it into Illustrator and just vectorized the hell out of it. It was a lot of fun. Got to change it up while keeping in mind what would look good on a t-shirt. The options Redbubble has with phone cases, laptop skins, throw pillows, duvet covers, etc., really gives you another way to look at your daily used household items. And the new leggings option is real exciting, I’ve been into developing patterns lately, so being able to design for leggings is the most exciting part.

While we’re on the topic of Blue Velvet, I came across this article from last year – 21 Things You Might Not Know About ‘Blue Velvet’. Reading those facts, I can’t imagine how different the movie would have been with Molly Ringwald and Helen Mirren, and living in this day and age it’s strange to think about how “disturbing” this movie was considered when it was released. Maybe I’m way too familiar with it to be weirded out by its bizarre nature, but it really did spark disgust back in its day. It’s understandable why it’s considered a cult film for sure.
I think you can get that from this one scene alone.
