Protest In Athens

Protest In Athens, Greece

I’m not political, in fact I don’t know much happening in the world of politics in general. I’m completely clueless. But with the craziness happening in Greece right now, I can’t help but talk about it.

I happened to travel to the one country that is just crumbling to pieces, but it’s not my fault that my family hails from Greece. Since being here, I’ve watched so much happen. The country is freaking out, and I think they have the right to. They are so badly in debt that the government is considering ANOTHER bailout, which will only push them deeper into debt. Since talk of this bailout and the possibility of exiting the European Union, I’ve walked into empty supermarkets and witnessed long ass lines at the ATM. People are so afraid of waking up one morning and finding that their currency is completely useless. They’re stocking up on food and whatever money they have. So many people have taken money out that the country closed all the banks for the week and have a limit of how much money you can take out daily at the ATM. It’s so bad that the public transportation is free for the week because no one has money. Can you imagine living with that fear of waking up to that sort of change? What can you do at that point?

In regards to the bailout, the people want to vote against it. I went to my first protest ever yesterday where they all chanted “NO”. I’m with that. Why dig the country deeper into debt?

Obviously it’s a horrible situation that’s happening here, but it’s been an interesting experience seeing it up close and personal when I’ve grown up only really knowing the problems America dealt with. You can hear all you want on the news, but it’s a different experience actually being in the country that has problems. So here I get an up close and personal experience understanding the full story of what people are dealing with on a daily basis, which is much different than what I’ve heard on the news.

Anyway, we didn’t stay long enough to see anything super eventful. We just saw lots of signs and heard yelling. We left before we saw it get PACKED. You can clearly tell that a lot of people plan on voting against the bailout, as I think is best as well. Guess we’ll see what happens real soon!

I don’t like getting into politics, and I don’t like including politics into my posts. I just wanted to share my first protest experience and all the negativity happening here in this country.
Have any of you attended a protest?
