Mermaid Wall Art

Mermaid Art

I think one thing that’s really cool is how everyone has their own interpretation of what they think mermaid art is. Really random topic, I know, but I wanted to share what my interpretation is. Spoiler: it involves scales, blue-teal-green, and a whole lot of glitter.

I had started this project closer to the beginning of the year but just kept putting off finishing it. My brother had given my this thin wood plank that he had, which was used as an art project when he was a child. I know it kinda sounds bad to cover up and ruin artwork from your childhood, but after a while, things start piling up if you never declutter. I find the guilt-free way to handle the scenario is to reuse and upcycle. And this was a perfectly nice piece of wood to work with to create some wall art.

So, that said, I didn’t have an idea or plan where to go with this. I kinda just went with the flow. I had a whole lot of paint chips that I wanted to use. I ended up cutting them into half circles and created “scale art”. I glued row after row with regular white glue. I used an array of colors still not knowing what I was working towards.

I eventually figured that I wanted to keep it simple, make it blue, and add glitter, which is exactly what my mermaid art interpretation is! I figured it was best to stick with what I believe. So I slowly started painting translucent layers of blue acrylic because I wanted the paint chip colors to peek through. This involved mixing little paint and a lot of water.

I added about three layers and got it to the kind of blue I wanted. When it dried, I added streaks of glitter paint – silver glitter and teal-ish glitter.

Even though it looks completely blue, you can see the original colors peeking through which is what I wanted, because fish scales have different base colors.

During the process as I was developing my idea, I concluded that I wanted to hang it in the bathroom. Since the bathroom was on my mind and there’s possible collection of humidity, I sprayed a couple of coats of clear glaze to seal in the work and hopefully fight against water/humidity damage.
There was an empty spot on the wall in which I felt would have been the perfect place to hang this art. Being that the bathroom is all white and tan-ish, I felt the blue would have popped perfectly and I am loving how is spruces up the bathroom!
