Happy Earth Day!

SCRAP PDX

Earth Day is a fantastic day. It’s a good reminder to keep up with doing your part to keep Mother Earth thriving.

I’d like to think I do my part as much as I can. To be honest, I’m a bit of a water waster, but I make up for it for all the reusing and recycling I take part in sometimes known as hoarding. Tomato…tom-AH-to. Or just tomato. Anyway, my goal is to try and produce the least amount of waste as possible. And I think it’s important to keep conscious of it. Not that I’m trying to sound all hippie-dippy.

While I was living in Portland, I found it interesting comparing how the outdoors were treated opposed to New York. In Portland, there’s not one piece of garbage on the ground; I don’t even recall spotting gum on the sidewalks. Talk about clean! Hell, people will yell at you if you don’t dispose of your cigarette properly. They take their recycling and water usage very seriously. People truly follow the age old “if it’s yellow, let it mellow,…”. Even their airports have flushers with two options to reduce the amount of water waste. I would say Oregonians in general do a pretty good job at taking care of their own land. I think everyone should take notes.

One of my favorite places in Portland was SCRAP (See photo above ⤴ ). It’s such a crafters paradise. People donate the most random odds and ends, usually items would you think to throw out (bottle tops, jars, half used pencils, corks, etc.). I’ve bought things like binder clips, thread, and paint, in which I’ve always spent less than five bucks. It’s pretty amazing.
Basically this is one big recyclin’ heaven. You never know when you’ll need the most random of the random scraps and I really wish every city had one (except San Francisco, because they have one too). If I wouldn’t find it a bit ridiculous to do so, I would ship over boxes to SCRAP of useless thangs I have that I would prefer not throwing out. There’s a difference between SCRAP and your average thrift store. I feel weird giving empty jars to thrift stores, but I wouldn’t feel any bit of weird giving empty jars to SCRAP.

Anyone wanna open up an east coast SCRAP with me?
