90’s Name Game

I got a kick out of writing up this list of songs featuring names and prefixes, so I want to take it to another level today and single out the 90’s decade and share songs with names from over fifteen years ago. There are so many gems, but these especially stand out for me, in alphabetical order of course!

01. Gepetto by Belly

Belly is such a hidden gem from the 90’s. Their discography is full of wonderful alternative rock songs with a fun groove and sweet vocals. This song is no exception. Dat bassline! Dat voice!

02. Jane Says by Jane’s Addiction

Jane’s Addiction definitely has a unique sound, and it has yet to be imitated these days. At least I think so. This song is fun with some sort of tropical feel with them steel drums. Even though this song technically was written and released in the late 80’s, it was really popularized through the 90’s, and so therefore it will remain on this list!

03. Jeremy by Pearl Jam

Could this be Pearl Jam’s biggest hit? I’d say it’s one of them for sure. A classic, dark song that had a deep message. Eddie Vedder’s voice creates such a good melody that makes this a pretty good karaoke song. Keep that in mind for a future 90’s karaoke party!

04. Joey by Concrete Blonde

The underdog from this decade. Joey was featured in their third album, but this song put their name on the charts. Concrete Blonde knows how to belt out alternative rock ballads so well.

05. What’s The Frequency, Kenneth? by R.E.M.

Prime R.E.M. but not a song that gets nearly enough attention as it should, which was said to be influenced by some kind of true event. Because of their “college radio sound”, they manage to write songs that don’t seem dated no matter what their songs are about. They can probably pass as a modern day band, don’t you think?

06. Maria by Blondie

This would be my number one favorite song with my name in it. Debbie Harry and Blondie are the coolest of the cool, and they know how to make my name sound pleasant. I sometimes listen to this song thinking they’re singing about me. Is that lame? Well, I hope not.

07. Polly by Nirvana

Based on true events, Kurt managed to write such a haunting song which matches the severity of the story. The unplugged version of Polly is so well known, and most of the time more preferred over the studio version. It just captures the eeriness.

08. Tracy Jacks by Blur

A great Brit pop jam which is so Blur, as opposed to the song that everyone seems to know them by. I wouldn’t necessarily add this to the karaoke list, but this would be a fun car jam/road trip song. I should make a road trip playlist one day, hmm.

From this list, it seems the majority of these songs were either written about true events or personal relationships, which is kind of a duh statement as most music is based on some event that sparked inspiration. But in this batch, it seems that these songs are on the darker side as opposed to the kind of music someone, such as Taylor Swift, writes about these days. The 90’s featured a lot of tragedy (drug/alcohol addiction, death), and you can see that in plenty of songs from this decade. Wow, this post got dark real fast, hah!

Not ending it on that note, most of these are good sing alongs as the 90’s seemed to succeed with memorable melodies and awesome music arrangements. I can’t help but praise music from the 90’s. It was such an amazing decade for original music. Possibly even the last decade to feature true original music, if I could make such a bold statement!
What do y’all think?
